KF Market Opens for the 2012 Season

KING FERRY -- The King Ferry Farmers' Market will set up at King Ferry Winery twice a month starting Saturday.
Food and crafts will be sold from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first and third Saturday of every month through October at 658 Lake Road, King Ferry, Cayuga County.
The winery also is hosting an exhibit of works by Finger Lakes photographer Carl Schofield until July 31. The photographs are on view in the Cayuga Lake winery's tasting room, where the art changes every two or three months.
Schofield, a former research scientist at Cornell University, specializes in nature and travel photography. He has included in the exhibit images of popular Tompkins County attractions, such as Robert H. Treman State Park.
Schofield, an Ithaca resident for more than 50 years, also has photographed areas of New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii.

2012 Season News

Despite the unusually warm winter (so far), June still seems far away…unless you are
a farmers’ market vendor. Members of the King Ferry Farmers’ Market are already
working toward the upcoming season. This year, the Market will be held on the first and
third Saturdays of each month from June through October, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the
King Ferry Winery.

At the beginning of June, the fresh and delicious foods you’ve been waiting for will
start with greens, herbs, this year’s maple syrup, Keeley McGarr’s cheese, free-range
eggs, organic flours and more from the Shaws’ Heritage Harvesters, jams and tropical
marmalades from Glebe Farm, sweet treats from Man in the Moon and fair-trade
chocolate and coffee from the Poplar Ridge Friends’ San Pedro group.

June also brings graduations, weddings and family gatherings that call for gifts. One of
Brenda Halton’s casseroles or a set of Dick Bradley’s glass coasters would start off a new
home in style. There is jewelry for every taste, from Cheryl Germain’s bright and bold
felts to Sara Beth Stewart’s delicate silver spirals. For friends (or even yourself), there
are hand-sewn specialties in unique fabrics from Ellen Marsh and sheep’s milk soaps (in
sheep shapes!), baby-soft handspun yarns and roving for spinners from Trinity Farm.

This is only a sampling from the King Ferry Farmers’ Market; you can expect to see
much more. If you are a grower or crafter who would like to participate, please get in
touch with the group’s secretary, Linda Schwab, who would also love to hear from musicians and musical groups interested in performing at the market. (And if you need a special gift before June, she’ll be happy to connect you with the local artists listed.) Finally, please watch for updates so that you’re ready for the best in local food and gifts when the season starts.
